Camping at Princetown Recreation Reserve

Camping at Princetown Recreation Reserve

The Princetown Recreation Reserve is located six kilometres east of the 12 Apostles, adjacent to the Gellibrand River. We camped here over the Australia Day weekend 2023. The drive in was easy and simple, we came via the back way, not along the Great Ocean Road. Use the map below for directions,

The Princetown Recreation Reserve offers both powered and unpowered camping sites in a lovely bush setting. The powered sites are along the fence of the oval, you will find the unpowered sites dispersed throughout the reserve. Many of the sites are tucked away in quiet corners. These sites are nestled amongst the trees and offer a more secluded and private camping experience. They are suitable for tents, caravans, and camper trailers.

Loads of space to set up camping at Princetown Recreation Reserve

Sites are able to be pre-booked but no site numbers are allocated. When you arrive, take a drive around to see what is available and what area you like the look of best.

The busiest times of the year are the Christmas and New Year period, Easter and other Public Holidays. Pre-booking is recommended. Other times of the year I imagine you would be ok to arrive to find availability. There is no online booking system so a simple phone call will have you booked in! There were no EFTPOS facilities when we stayed and cash was preferred payment method.

The rates are extremely affordable!

The Princetown Recreation Reserve is pet-friendly and campfires are allowed in approved fire bins. These can be hired from reception, together with wood to purchase. Please note that the whole of the Parks Victoria National Parks are dog-free and heavy fines do apply. Another dog-friendly Victorian Park we have stayed in is in Porepunkah.

A campfire whilst camping is such a joy

The Princetown Recreation Reserve is a great base for exploring and sightseeing along the Great Ocean Road. It is close to The 12 Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge, Port Campell and the Otway National Park. Bear in mind that over the peak periods there are often delays to enter the car parks for some of these attractions.

You may also like to visit the Otway Fly, hike part of the Great Ocean Road Walk or tour along the 12 Apostles Gourmet Food Trail.

The Princetown Recreation Reserve is located close to Princetown. There is nothing in the township of Princetown though. The closet shops at Port Campbell.

The reserve features a variety of facilities for visitors including a great playground, tennis courts, cricket gear to hire, camp kitchen, tables and bathrooms with loo’s and showers.

Walking out of the reserve along the road to the bridge you will find the Princetown Wetlands Boardwalk, which winds through a scenic wetland area.

Fishing, kayaking/canoeing and SUP is popular along the river. You are able to start at the bridge and float all the way past the reserve. The beach is not patrolled and unsafe for swimming. Our kids did enjoy swimming in the river.

We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend at Princetown Recreation Reserve and we would happily stay again. I am now searching for other recreation reserve camping spots. I am sure there are many hidden gems. Please let me know if you have stayed at any before which you would recommend.
