The Lux Express Bus!

When planning our White Christmas trip over Christmas 2022, I wanted to try and visit the Baltic States’ capital Cities. But; We already had about 9 different flights planned over the 3 weeks trip! So I looked at alternatives for traveling from one Baltic capital to the next – Tallin to Riga and Riga to Vilnius.

After some initial research, I found that there are no direct trains between the capitals, train travel is definitely possible. But it is not direct and we were short of time.

Getting the Lux Express bus from Tallinn to Riga, and Riga to Vilnius is one of the easiest ways to travel The Baltics.

Catching the Lux Express bus in the Baltic States is a convenient and comfortable way to travel between cities. These buses offer a variety of amenities, including Wi-Fi, power outlets, and comfortable seating. The seats are larger than on a flight and all seats have screens!

When planning your trip, you can purchase tickets in advance on the Lux Express website. This was a very simple process.

When arriving at the bus station, make sure to check the departure board for the correct platform and departure time in case there are any changes to what is on your ticket. The bus will typically arrive 15-30 minutes before departure, and boarding will begin about 10 minutes before departure. It was also convenient that you could show your ticket on your phone straight from your e-mail, rather that having to print it out. On the ticket, the platform and your seat number were listed, making it easy to find the bus and get settled easily (our platform and seat number were unchanged from when I booked months in advance). We also needed to “flash” our passports for ID.

On board the bus, you will find comfortable seating and plenty of legroom (more so than on a plane). Wi-Fi and power outlets are available for most of the buses, so you can stay connected while on the road. There are also toilets on board (We didn’t use them so I can’t comment on how they were!).

Lux Express offers a variety of routes in the Baltic States, including between Tallinn and Riga, Tallinn and Vilnius, and Riga and Vilnius. With regular departures and comfortable amenities, Lux Express is a great option for travel in the Baltic States.

Travelling the Baltics By Bus

With cheap prices, a direct service, and central bus stations it’s easily the best way to see the gorgeous capital cities of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

Where is the Tallinn Bus Station?

The Tallinn Bus Station is actually quite a walk away from the city centre, we stayed in the Old Town and caught a ‘Bolt’. Read more on Tallinn here.

Where is the Riga Bus Station?

The Riga Bus Station is about a  walk-able distance from the Old Town so is very convenient. There are toilets and some small shops inside. We were all busting when we arrived, luckily Ross had just handed over a bunch of coins to me as we needed to pay to use the toilets (very common, just not something I had actually thought about in advance!).

Where is the Vilnius Bus Station?

It’s an easy walk from the bus station to Vilnius Old Town, approx 15 minutes, depending on where you are staying. The bus station has a supermarket and a few smaller shops.

Overall views on catching the Lux Express bus in the Baltic States

Lux Express focuses mostly on the Baltic region but they also have routes to Poland. Lux Express offers several buses a day, usually every 1-2 hours, so it makes travel from one city to the next easy to fit into your schedule. I would have no hesitation in traveling by Lux Express again. It made a great, easy change from flying.

Not to mention catching the Lux Express bus is a super economical way to travel!
