Arriving in Vilnius after another fab 4-hour Lux Express ride from Riga on New Year’s Day, we were super excited to see our friends waiting for us at the train station! We were not in Vilnius to rush around and tick off things to see and do. We were here to catch up with friends and have fun!! My friend Lorna is a friend from my traveling days many many years ago. We havenโt seen each other in over 20 years and havenโt met each other’s kids. There was lots to catch up on!

Lorna and I! Long time between catch-ups xx
We opted to stay in a hostel rather than a hotel. This way we could have our own rooms but still, have the communal space for catching up. We did lots of research and couldnโt find an Air BnB that was suitable so we booked Mikalo House Hostel. This is a budget option. It is nowhere near as fancy as the Steel House Hostel we stayed in Copenhagen.
If you’re planning a trip to Vilnius and looking for affordable and comfortable accommodations in the heart of the city, Mikalo House Hostel might be the perfect choice for you. This budget-friendly hostel offers private rooms and shared bathrooms, making it an ideal option for solo travelers, couples, families, or those on a tight budget.

Our room was huge

Mikalo House Hostel Location
Located in the heart of the city, Mikalo House Hostel is just a few minutes walk from Vilnius Old Town and many of the city’s top attractions. The hostel is situated in a historic building that has been recently renovated, giving it a modern and stylish look. There is a locked gate at the entrance and the front door (up a flight of stairs) is also locked.
Rooms and Amenities at Mikalo House
Mikalo House Hostel offers a range of private rooms and dormitories, each equipped with comfortable beds and clean bedding. The rooms are bright and airy, with large windows that let in plenty of natural light. Our room was on the top floor (no lift) and was large enough to sleep 6 (I requested to book the whole room) with a private bathroom.
The hostel also has a range of amenities, including a shared kitchen where guests can prepare their meals, the kitchen was small but well-stocked. The one thing that was missing from the property was a larger lounge space to sit and chill out. The table and chairs in the kitchen were the only space available to do this. ย The shared bathrooms were clean and well-maintained, with hot showers available at all times. Our bathroom on the top floor was clean and tidy, I had no issues.
Family-Friendly Features of Mikalo House
Mikalo House Hostel is not only budget-friendly, but also family-friendly. The hostel offers a range of services and facilities that cater to families, including:
- Family rooms: Mikalo House Hostel offers family rooms that can accommodate up to four or six people. These rooms have a double bed and a bunk bed, making them ideal for families with children. Our room had 2 sets of bunks and 2 single beds.
- Toys and games: Mikalo House Hostel has a selection of toys and games that children can enjoy during their stay for example a chess set and various (older kids and adults) books on the bookshelf. All our kids loved the large world map with flags.

We found plenty of family-friendly and kid-friendly places to eat in Vilnius. Here are the huge potato dumplings.
Nearby Attractions to Mikalo House
Vilnius is a vibrant city with plenty of things to see and do, and Mikalo House Hostel is perfectly situated to explore the city’s top attractions. Remember, that we were not here to tick boxes. Vilnius Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is just a short walk away, where visitors can explore the city’s historic streets and stunning architecture.

So much fun on the Funicular to the Gediminas Hill
Seems silly, but we (well 1) love to wander around supermarkets in a new city/country. Vilnius was no different. The supermarkets were great! The bakery section was huge, fresh, and delicious. So much choice!!!

Yum!
Other nearby attractions include the Gediminas Castle Tower, which offers panoramic views of the city, the Vilnius Cathedral, and St. Anne’s Church, which is considered one of the most beautiful churches in Lithuania.
