A highlight of our two weeks around Tasmania with kids was our 3 night stay at Sassafras Springs, Tasmania.
We 100% agree when the owners say that Sassafras Springs must be the healthiest, happiest and most relaxing place to stay in Tasmania.

Food shopping for Sassafras Springs
It’s recommended to purchase food for your meals on route, as we did.
If you come from the north or west, the closest food store is a Mini IGA Supermarket at Ouse, approximately 20 minutes drive (don’t forget to plan a visit to Lawrenny Gin whilst near Ouse!).
If you come from the direction of Hobart, there is a Woolworths Supermarket in New Norfolk, which is approximately 40 minutes away.

Plenty of fresh produce to pick and eat

Clothing at Sassafras Springs
The weather in Tasmania is very changeable. Sassafras Springs sits at an altitude of 400m. Enclosed toe shoes and a weatherproof jacket are recommended for you to be able to enjoy all weather conditions.
Sassafras Springs Location
Sassafras Springs in located in Ellendale, Tasmania. Ellendale is a 1.5-hour drive from Hobart through the Derwent River Valley at the base of Mt Field National Park. New Norfolk is approximately the halfway point. If traveling from Strahan, the distance can be misleading as the road is very windy and weather conditions can affect your traveling time. It is recommended you allow 3.5-4 hours for this journey and time for additional stops at Lake St Clair and the Wall.

Country views across Sassafras Springs
We actually took all day to travel from Strahan as there is so much to stop at along the way. Don’t rush this section of Tasmania. It’s gorgeous!
Ellendale is a cute little town with two churches, a picnic area with a playground and tennis court, and a post office stocked with some basics like bread and milk.

Our cottage at Sassafras Springs
As you can see, Sassafras Springs is a fantastic accommodation option for your trip around Tassie with kids. We wouldn’t hesitate to go back again. In fact, we’d probably book a long weekend from Melbourne just to stay again!
