A highlight of our two weeks around Tasmania with kids was our 3 night stay at Sassafras Springs, Tasmania.
We 100% agree when the owners say that Sassafras Springs must be the healthiest, happiest and most relaxing place to stay in Tasmania.
What you can find in this post
Sassafras Springs, Accommodation
You’ll find 4 unique cottages at Sassafras Springs. Although there isn’t car parking out the front of each cottage, a car park is available a short distance away. Luggage trolleys are available at the car park to transport your bags to your cottage.
Raspberry Cottage, Pearl’s Cottage, Hop Pickers Cottage, and The Old Farmhouse are 4 unique self-contained cottages with basic cooking facilities and wood heaters. There are TV’s in the cottages and WIFI but we did not even turn on the TV!
Relax on organic cotton or bamboo sheets overnight (European bedding), with bed warmers (electric blankets) ample hot water, and a functional kitchen.
Things to do at Sassafras Springs
Breathe the Fresh Air!
Organic Vegetable garden for guests to forage and eat! A highlight for the kids.
Chickens to feed and fresh eggs to collect daily.
Curl up by the fires in Winter or enjoy a glass of wine on the deck in the long afternoon light of Summer.
Enjoy the BBQ facilities including undercover eating and outdoor fireplace.
There is so much for the kids to do and explore at Sassafras Springs. I wish we had more time just to ‘be’.
Some things that Ned and Olive loved –
Talking to the chickens!!
Kids Playground – Swings, slide, sandpit and a big grassy area for ball games
Art Studio- a place to play, paint or create with scissors, paper, and glue
The Teahouse – fun for kids in a miniature café with tables and chairs and toy cooking equipment.
‘Treasure Island’ walk. No more to be said about this! Just follow the map on your visit! The kids haven’t stopped talking about Treasure Island!!!
Food shopping for Sassafras Springs
It’s recommended to purchase food for your meals on route, as we did.
If you come from the north or west, the closest food store is a Mini IGA Supermarket at Ouse, approximately 20 minutes drive (don’t forget to plan a visit to Lawrenny Gin whilst near Ouse!).
If you come from the direction of Hobart, there is a Woolworths Supermarket in New Norfolk, which is approximately 40 minutes away.

Clothing at Sassafras Springs
The weather in Tasmania is very changeable. Sassafras Springs sits at an altitude of 400m. Enclosed toe shoes and a weatherproof jacket are recommended for you to be able to enjoy all weather conditions.
Sassafras Springs Location
Sassafras Springs in located in Ellendale, Tasmania. Ellendale is a 1.5-hour drive from Hobart through the Derwent River Valley at the base of Mt Field National Park. New Norfolk is approximately the halfway point. If traveling from Strahan, the distance can be misleading as the road is very windy and weather conditions can affect your traveling time. It is recommended you allow 3.5-4 hours for this journey and time for additional stops at Lake St Clair and the Wall.
We actually took all day to travel from Strahan as there is so much to stop at along the way. Don’t rush this section of Tasmania. It’s gorgeous!
Ellendale is a cute little town with two churches, a picnic area with a playground and tennis court, and a post office stocked with some basics like bread and milk.
As you can see, Sassafras Springs is a fantastic accommodation option for your trip around Tassie with kids. We wouldn’t hesitate to go back again. In fact, we’d probably book a long weekend from Melbourne just to stay again!
